What will you learn?  

This course introduces you to how children develop from birth to six years, and the important role of play in learning and growth.  This course focuses on physical, emotional, social, language, and cognitive development, and gives you the skills to observe children and to plan play activities. 

What you will learn: 

  • The main stages of how young children grow and develop. 
  • How play helps children learn new skills and build confidence. 
  • Simple ways to watch and record what children do during play. 
  • How to spot the different skills children are using while they play – like talking, moving, thinking or solving problems. 
  • How to support children during play.  
  • How to plan a fun play activity that helps a child learn and grow. 
  • Understand the adult/caregiver’s role in helping children through play and how that supports their learning and development. 

Who is this course for?  

  • People who are interested in the learning more about a child’s development through play. 
  • People who have been out of education for a long time and want a gentle restart. 
  • People who have not been in further and higher education before. 
  • People with English as a second language. 
  • People who would like to progress to Special Needs Assisting QQI Level 5, Psychology of Human Growth and Development QQI Level 5, and Social Studies QQI Level 5. 

Entry  

  • You have completed the Junior Certificate or a similar. 
  • We may ask you to do a written assessment to work out which course suits you best. 
  • We give priority to students from the Dublin 7 and 11 areas and to people getting a social welfare payment.
