Community Education

Community Education is about bringing learning into local communities in a way that is inclusive, respectful, and empowering. At City of Dublin FET College (formally the City of Dublin ETB Adult Education Service) we offer:

  • Free or low-cost courses developed in partnership with local community groups
  • Learning that’s shaped by real needs and lived experiences of the people taking part
  • Support from a team of friendly, experienced tutors
  • Courses that build confidence and teach new skills

Community Education is especially for adults who may have:

  • Had a difficult or negative experience with school
  • Missed out on learning opportunities in the past
  • Faced disadvantage or felt excluded from education

Through Community Education, learners can:

  • Build self-confidence and make meaningful connections
  • Take steps toward further education, training, or work
  • Explore learning in a group setting that is friendly, supportive, and open to new ideas
  • Take part in all kinds of learning—whether accredited or not

Above all, Community Education is about giving everyone a fair chance to learn, grow, and be included.

We work in partnership with over 60 local community organisations across Finglas and Cabra to deliver classes directly in their own venues. These courses are offered to the members, clients, or learners of each group, making learning accessible, familiar, and community-based.

Our partners include:

  • HSE community health and wellbeing groups
  • Disability services
  • Addiction support organisations
  • Family resource centres
  • Women’s and Men’s Sheds
  • Parents and guardians linked with local schools
  • A wide range of community groups and local agencies
  • Child and Family Resource Centres
  • Women’s and Men’s Sheds

We offer classes through a two-term model each year:

  • January to June
  • September to December

To note, classes can be shorter in length so contact us to discuss your ideas, details below. If your group would like to host classes, here’s how the process works:

  • Course application forms for the September–December term are sent out in early May
  • Course applications for the January–June term go out in late November
  • Groups fill in the application form outlining their learners’ needs and proposed course ideas
