What will you learn? 

This course explores the causes and impacts of addiction, and how individuals and communities can respond. It mixes useful information with hands-on skills to help you support others in a respectful and understanding way. You will learn about:  

  • Different types of addiction – including drugs, alcohol, gambling, and behavioural addictions. 
  • The effects of addiction on individuals, families, and communities. 
  • Communication skills for supportive conversations. 
  • Community responses to addiction and how to get involved. 
  • Ethical and responsible support practices. 

 Topics include: 

  • What is addiction? – types, causes, and impacts. 
  • Substance use and misuse – understanding patterns and consequences. 
  • Approaches to treatment – key theories and methods. 
  • Counselling and listening skills – respectful, non-judgmental support. 
  • Community action – joining or leading local initiatives. 

Who is this course for?  

  • It will help you if you have completed the Junior Certificate or completed another single QQI level 4 or 5 module.  Chat to us if you do have these qualifications; everyone’s situation is different. 
  • You must have native speaker level of English. If you have not received any qualifications in Ireland, you may be asked to do a written assessment. We also provide English language classes.  
  • We give priority to students from the Dublin 7 and 11 areas and to people getting a social welfare payment.
