Animal Behaviour QQI Level 5

Class Time: Thursday 11.30am - 4pm and Friday 2pm - 4pm
Duration: September 2025 – January 2026

What will you learn?  

This course looks at how animals behave and why. You will learn about how animals have adapted to survive in their natural environments. You will learn about: Adaptations: 

  • Learn how animals change over time. 
  • Understand how animals are suited to their habitats and climates, and how best to house them in captivity. 
  • Explore animal social behaviour – whether they live alone, in pairs, or in groups. 

Reproduction: 

  • Study animal mating behaviours and why they matter. 
  • Compare how different species (like reptiles, birds, and mammals) reproduce and care for their young. 

Responses to the Environment: 

  • See how animals respond to different things around them and how they navigate, migrate, or return home. 
  • Learn how animals communicate – using sight, sound, smell, and touch. 
  • Understand predator and prey behaviours. 

Scientific Study: 

  • Trace how animals became domesticated and compare wild and domestic species. 
  • Carry out simple behaviour studies using observation and recording. 

Who is this course for?  

  • This course gives a strong base in understanding animals, useful for anyone interested in animal care, science, or wildlife. 
  • This course is for people who have completed Animal Welfare QQI Level 4. 
  • This course is for people who have not been in further and higher education before. 
  • This course is for people that would like to progress to college.  

Entry Requirements

  • You have completed the Junior Certificate or another single QQI level 4 or QQI level 5 module. 
  • You may be asked to do a written assessment to work out which course suits you best. 
  • You must have native speaker level of English. If you have not received any qualifications in Ireland, you may be asked to do a written assessment.  
  • We also offer English language classes.  
  • You will need to have good typing skills as you will have to type up your assignments. We have a wide range of computer courses to help you. 
  • We give priority to students from the Dublin 7 and 11 areas and to people getting a social welfare payment. 
  • You may need to buy a book for this course.
